Early autumn, and the big fleece has begun. The mammoths are still on the northern plains. These creatures evolve from the hairless elephants in Africa, and have become living forts against the cold. Under their skin has a layer fat ten centimeters thick for insulation. Also they have small ears and short tails to prevent from losing too much heat.
On top of all this, they have their characteristic carpet of hair, which is now growing to a meter in length with their bodies respond to the dropping temperatures. As the weeks pass, the true ? climate begins to bite. The humans have already left the plains to seek shelter and mild weather for they survive. Soon the mammoths too will go. With little grass available, and no protection for the wind shield to the average minus 50 degree centigrade .Even they have to move south.
This ice age is in fact only one out of many. Two and a half million years ago, the earth climate started on a ?？ of warmer and colder experience. There have been almost 50 ice ages so far. But this is the coldest yet. The matriarch decided to take time to head off toward the less exposed valleys of the Alps. It is the four hundred kilometer journey they are driven to every year.6:47--9:01
