This afternoon, professor Chen Guohua from Beijing Foreign Languages University gave a lecture about Dictionary in language learning.

 

He introduced the importance of many kinds of dictionaries.Then i definitely knew that it did have significance to use enlish dictionary while learning, especially English-English dictionary. However,English-Chinese dictionary is much more useful for translaters but not learners.Some time there is no corresponding meaning about words between different languages.

 

Concerning how to enlarge vocabularies, professor Chen said it depended on your goals. If you want to pass GRE or something like that, it would be wise to take a quick-memorizing methord.As a result, most of them will be forgotten after that examination. If you want to memorize them for ever, you'd better learn the affix and stem of english words.

 

When it came to the spoken english, he showed that the best and only way to improve your prounciation  was imitating. With that methord, he practiced a lot many years ago and now he could speak perfect english. First, find some typical meterials such as address made by giant. then ,learn them by heart and imitate what it sounds so that you can pronunce as well as their speakers.

 

He added that the aim of spoken english was to communicate with someone. if he /she could see your means, you succeed. it is usual to make mistakes in pronunciation or verb-tense. the more mistake you make , the more progress you make.

 

Many students confuse that they read a lot english novels,or magzines ,or english WEB to improve english, but it seems useless. Chen told us that it would be a long way to improve english, try to read meterials that interests you. It is unwise to read every version of english papers, just pick up useful phrases or vocabularies for fun.Intrest is the best teacher.
