According to the Energy Information Administration of USA, in 1999, hydroelectric generations were 341,312 GWH with an installed capacity of 66,954 MW in Canada, the number was 319,484 GWH and 79,511 MW in America, and 258,603 GWH, 57,517 MW in Brazil, 160,500GWH, 44,000MW in Russia, 82,237 GWH, 22,083MW in India, while in China, the hydroelectric generations were 204,300 GWH with an installed capacity of 65,000 MW.

When come to the annual average generation per installed capacity, it was not hard to find that it was 5.0977 GWH/MW in Canada, 4.9655 GWH/MW in Brazil, 4.0181 GWH/MW in America, 3.7239 GWH/MW in India, and 3.6477 GWH/MW in Russia. But in China, it was only 3.1430 GWH/MW. That is to say, we generate less hydropower per MW installed capacity annually, which is at a total of 1.95 GWH less than Canada, and 1.82 GWH less than Brazil, 0.88 GWH less than America.

From the analysis above, we can find that our country’s annual average generations per installed capacity are less than any other countries above. It may indicate that the installed capacity of our hydropower plants is too large. This problem emerges mainly in that we referred the investment on installed capacity per KW to as the important economic evaluation parameter in 1990s. ‘

Besides, we generally consider the flood prevention efficiency first on conventional hydroelectric scheme. And then is generation and irrigation efficiency. However, we hardly consider environment protection. Therefore, we must look far ahead and aim high in the following hydroelectricity exploitation, just like the exploitation of Columbia in USA.
