A “continued” tough project-TGD

446 views. 2009-8-5 08:52 |Individual Classification:Transn|

I ues the word "continued" in the title, coz in my opinion, the consequences of the Three Gorges Dam should be paid much attention to although the project has been finished. Actually, it is a project "unfinised".

The benefits from the Three Gorges Project are concentrated on three aspects, namely its functions on flood prevention, electric generation and shipping. We have talked much about these advantages and I do not want to repeat the cliché. However, it does not mean that I think the disadvantages outweigh the advantages of Three Gorges Dam. I just think the praising comments on a finishing project are far less significant than the objective and reasonable analysis on its disadvantages, which will be meaningful for us to figure out solutions or just take them as the lessons.

It took a rather long time to make the decision of putting the plan of Three Gorges Project into practice, coz the environmental effects are overwhelming, including the damage to the cultural relics and historic sites and ecological environment changes together with large scale immigration.

First of all, it has been proved that there are quite a large quantities of historical relics buried under the ground of Three Gorges Area, the majority of which are extremely valuable and have never been discovered in other places. It is pity that there's not enough time to dig all of them out. It is reported that what we have dig out was just 10 percent of the total. Apart form the buried, some places of interested have to be submerged, for example the Temple of Zhang Fei, which is a disastrous loss in the field of Chinese historic culture.

Secondly, the establishment of the Three Gorges Dam will have a great influence on the ecological environment in a large scope, such as vegetation deterioration and climate change. The living environment of flora and fauna has been dramatically changed. It is said that the climate near Three Gorges Dam has changed abnormally, keeping cold in the original warming period. The landslides occurred in some places are also relevant to the Dam, according to the estimation. Additionally, some species, fish for example, have problems in breeding for the changes of their living environment due to the storage of water.

Third, a large population of immigration is a serious problem to deal with. The people in Three Gorges Area had to give up the hometown where they had live for generations owing to the construction of the project. Where the immigrants should be settled down? How will they make their living in the new hometown? How to deal with the possible social problems caused by immigration? Those are all problems we can not shirk.

the TGD always remembers me of the Aswan Dam, the biggest dam in the world before TGD was constructed. but wish the two will be different. does the construction of TGD has anything to do with the earthquake?
