Membrane Structure Constructions is a novel and typical type of construction in 21 century and it has been one of the main type of long-span space constructions. It combines the application of architecture, structural mechanics, fine chemistry industry, materials science and computer technology to realize the symbolizing space structure. The water cube is the largest membrane structure construction in the world. ETFE membrane material, the most advanced energy saving and environmental protecting material worldwide, is adopted to its external surface. According to Tan Xiaochun, manager of National Indoor Stadium Project, the service life of this material is more than 20 years, and it can actually serve longer than it. People can even walk on it to enjoy the wonderful feeling. So far only three enterprises in the world can produce the membrane structure.

The whole construction of water cube consists of more than 3000 pneumatic cushions of various size and shape, covering an area of 100,000 m2, known as the largest in the world. Apart from the floor, the whole surface adopts membrane structure. The pneumatic cushions installed are inflated into “bubbles” by using the inflating pipelines fixed in the steel brackets in advance. The whole process of inflating is under the intelligent control of computers and the “bubbles” can be kept in the best conditions according to the atmospheric pressure and light conditions.
