Moon Geezer:Chinese Cupid!

This morning, a blog, named as The Story of Cupid, grasps my attention immediately after I just throw a glimse on it. I know the name, Cupid, before but I surely don't know the detail of his story. Through that funny blog, I learn of that Cupid has been the symbol of love of westerners. It is said that he has beautiful golden hair and lovely face. There are two swings on his back which can make him fly freely. Cupid, together with his mother, takes charge of love and marriage of gods and common persons. He has a gold bow, a gold arrow and a lead arrow. persons who are hit by his gold arrow will fall in love with each other, even though they are rivals before, and their love should be sweety and happy. On the countrary, the ones who were hit by his lead arrow will turn down love, even if they are good friends before. It is said that the eyes of Cupid are covered by cloth when aiming at his objects, so people say that love is result of fate. No one can resist the arrow of Cupid, man or god. He once hit Apollo with gold arrow and hit Daphne with his lead arrow, as a result, Apollo was dumped.

I don't want to waste your time to listen to my chattering about the shooting skills of Cupid. What I want to discuss here is that there is a Chinese Cupid in fairy story of China too. Through comparing them, we can understand the different love values between westerners  and Chinese. Chinese Cupid is called Yue Lao, in English, it means Moon geezer. It is said that in Tang Dynasty, there was a people called Wei Gu travelling in Song city. One night, when wandering in a street, he saw a geezer sitting on the ground under the moon. He was thumbing through a thick and big book, besides him, there was a big sack which was stuffed with red threads. Wei Gu asked curiously: " What are you looking at ? " "A book regards to the marriages of male and females in the world." Answered the elder. " What are those red threads in your sack for? " "These red threads are used to link the feet of couples. No matter how faraway  they are  or how baleful their relationship is, only if I tie  a red thread on their feet, would they fall in love and tie the knots immediatly. " Because of the popularity of this story, people begun to believe that the loves between males and females  are all aroused by Moon Geezer. Nowadays, people call matchmaker as moon geezer too.

From the methods of making lovers of Cupid and Moon Geezer, we can see the different marriage mindsets of westerner and Chinese. Westerners are incline to has romance under freedom. So they creat a love god , Cupid, who shoots an arrow blindly. Traditionally, Chinese yougsters' marriages were arranged by their parents. So, we Chinese ascribe the emerging of love and marriage to an old man, this is not a coincidence. This reflects Chinese culture precisly. When Cupid does his job, he always choose daytime. So the lovers of western countries can show their love boldly. But Moon Geezer always works at night. So the Chinese lovers decline to show their love publicly and in tradition Chinese Marriage rituals, the head of the bridegroom would be covered by a red scarf. Is it funny?

The last thing I will say here is that no matter Cupid or Moon Geezer, they are all eclipsed by those scientists who discovered Hormone. Just because of the influence of  sex Hormone, male and female attracted with each other. Don't be fascinated by Cupid and Moon Geezer, they are just legends!
