It’s a typical autumn dusk. A hoar sky scattered with purplish clouds; the breeze calm and cool, even though the scents of May flowers have long faded away; all trees standing in silence dressed in grey-green. After many capricious, worrying days and nights, now that the dust has settled, I enjoy a peaceful and light heart in such a mild autumn twilight. I even whistle a little into the sky.
Following my usual evening-reading habit, I sit by the window of cold and transparent glass. On my lap is “Three Days to See” which just arrived to me, a gift from my sister-like friend, a beautiful beautiful bilingual book. Helen Keller never had one day to see, yet her inner world kept bright, because she could “see” with her heart the shining pearls of happiness which are usually passed over by busy people in the outer world. In my opinion, there are merely love and knowledge as two eyes to help us see clearly. I already knew the power of the eyes—love and knowledge—at age 6 when doctors and nurses in the hospital presented me with a comic masterpiece “三毛流浪记”. That gift brought me great pleasure and comfort after my major surgery, and I preserve it in my bookshelf to this day.
The curtain of night falls. More and more windows are lit up, as if an ocean of glorious jewels stretching out to the skyline. I love the serene freedom of staying alone, but I also love the warm lights of a family. In a few days Dad will return; the home will revive the “noisy” warmth. Now I decide to watch The Power of Corporations. I love most programs on CCTV-2 and CCTV-10, since I’m fond of history about universe and earth, economics and politics, cultures and wars... I realize I’ve neglected this inertest so long that my brain feels like dull and rusty. A person can’t be forever confined to personal annoyances, anyhow.
I remember a sentence of my favorite female Chinese writer Echo (三毛), “Fate can push me into poverty, bring me various setbacks, but can’t carry away the happiness in my heart. Whether in water or fire, I laugh at Fate: You’ve got no hold on me!”
