I am reading <Moment in Peking> recently, just as I planned. However, I just can't help thinking of the Foreword written by Lin Yutang's son Lin Taiyi. He described his father's whole life in his view, stretching out a more vivid Lin Yutang, but not a master of literature.
What impresses me most is the love between Lin Yutang and his wife Liao Cuifeng. When they got married, Lin Yutang burned their marriage certificate down, for he said that "Marriage Certificate is only useful when having a divorce", which showed their determination of loving each other forever and living together till old and grey.
Lin Yutang quited his job as the head of the Arts and Letters Division of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris and moved to the South of France. He loved the simple life--sitting at a cafe and watching the fishermen's boats return with their catch, and going to market to shop for food. He grabbed his wife's hand and said, "Never mind, we'll start all over again. This pen of mine is still capable of earning a couple of dollars."
In 1954, Lin became the first chancellor of the newly founded Nanyang University in Singapore. But, politics forced him to resign in a few months, and he and his wife returned to France. He was 60, but not feeling his age a bit. "I do not long for spring nor am I sad in the autumn," he said, "because my wife doesn't find me old."
They lived so simply that they were like children. He was writting again, and she was growing potatoes on the balcony. They took delight in the simple joys of fresh food and long walks.
Despite all the glories he owned and all the hardship he suffered in his whole life, he and his wife always hold tight together through thick and thin. That is the most wonderful thing in the world----Love!
Lin Yutang and Liao Cuifeng!
