Technology:Negative Impact

801 views. 2010-8-8 13:04

I know what you must be thinking~
It is an old topic.
You may think I will illustrate the topic by impressing the readers with a list of  terrible disasters, as devastating as possible, fed by technological advancement.
Yes, indeed, there are and were many cases in hand.Like the on-going oil spill in the gulf of mexico(you can't drill oil in the ocean wihout high level of know-how, right?),the panick caused by the inflow of cloned steak in the UK,  not to speak of the wars fueled by technological advancement and the 65 year-old atomic bombs blasts in Hiroshima and Nagasaki as well as the Chernobyl disaster in 1986.
Well, these disasters, though huge in scale and widely-known by people, in practise only affects certain countries or regions. For us, it means no more than a sign and a frown, and then we flip to another page of the paper.
So technology has no bearings on our daily lives?
Of course not, actually, they have sneaked into our daily habits and reshaped our behaviours from the first day you began to apply them.
Take for example, the way we express our thoughts. In the past we were inclined to choose talking to our friends or parents or keep them secretly down in our diaries. Now we have Internet.Chatting on-line and writing blogs on-line, to some extent, take a greater share of our daily communications.
Then comes the negative impact of technology on our handwritings.Chinese characters, typed in through letters from English alphbet, can no longer flow freely through our pen to the paper. The strikes get vague in our mind, mistakes are made often and, the worst of all, we sometimes just can't write down the characters we speak so freely with.
Children are even more vulnerable to this influence.
The cyber surfing not only entails alphebatical typing, which will affect their basic Chinese characters learning, but also will have an heavy impact on their reading. Many contents on-line tend to use pictures and videos to catch people's eye balls.Besides we have on-line films, video stations like Youku and Tudou, and, the most influential of all, on-line computer games. The vivid and easily comprehensiable visual information renders the reading of literal forms of information in a inferior position. Kids spending too much time in cyber cafes will find it painstaking to read the instructions and questions on the examination papers, hence lousy scores.
Not just Internet, technologies in other fields are also taking toll on our ease of life.
My father is fond of having lunch with the radio on.So while our mouths are full of food, our ears are stuffed with all kinds of advertisements. One of it says, "Come to buy our latest micro vediocamera, it is small and almost invisible, and it is also wearable. You can take it anywhere and record anything you want."Though it does not specify what's included in "anything" and I try my best to think good of it, I can hardly put my mind off the idea that many will use it in an illegal way, like probing into other people's privacy.
The British government has already put up the surveillence system, with numerous small video cameras installed in streets and building all over Britain.Similar systems in China are also in the planning stage and will be given widespread application in the near future. These actions are meant to protect individual safety and maintain the social order.Yet it indirectly infringe on people's privacy by recording almost the complete details of people's life, private and public alike.
Many similar cases also include the body scanners used in airport, which may potentially expose scannee's body to other people.
Technology indeed renders us a more convenient and comfortable life, yet its negative impact on our daily life should not be ignored. As the user who benefit from the utilisation of technology, we should always be aware that technology is a double-edged sword.

Everything in this world has two sides- a good one and a bad one. Therefore, because nothing is perfect, we should learn to tolerate, and it is up to us to use 2-sided things such as technology to its beneficial extent. The choice we make is up to us.
