After I watched The Blind Side

I hadn’t watched movies for a while. When I watched The Blind Side, I didn’t know it was a popular blockbuster already, getting several awards and nominations, and the leading actress Sandra Bullock wining the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance. After watching it, I was so touched by what the Touhy family has did for Michael, and amazed at what a great differences love can make.

The movie is actually based on the book The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game by Michael Lewis. It tells the true story of Michael Oher, American football offensive tackle. Oher was born in a single parent family. His mother was addicted to the crack cocaine and couldn’t take care of him. So when he was little, he was forcibly taken by the local committee and spent much time in and out of foster families during his formative years of childhood. Deep down in the heart, he has the security problem, he run away every time not long after he was in a new foster family, till he met the Touhy family who treated him like he was actually a part of it. One day after school finished, the homeless Oher was on his way to his temporary shelter, the Touhy drove by. The mother(Sean Tuohy) sympathized him and offered a stay-over in their home. After spending some time with Michael, she decided to help him. She straightened up the room for him, took care of his everyday needs, got him into the school football team, and helped him overcome the training problem. Regardless of circulating gossip that the decent family had a black teenager living with them under the same roof, Mrs. Touhy went trough all troubles, long waiting red tapes to adopt Michael, making him officially a member of the family. All the efforts finally paid. Michael standed out in the football team with his great performance and captured a lot of attention of many college coaches, getting offers of entrance and NCAA scholarship. While Michael’s low GPA standed in the way. And so they hired a tutor to help him with it. The joint efforts finally made him qualified for colleges’ entrance. And Michael decided to go to Ole Miss at last where Mr. and Mrs. Touhy had gone to. While there’s an episode that Michael thought Mrs. Tough only took him in so that he would play football for her alma mater. After Mrs. Tough cleaned up the whole thing and said any decision about choosing the college would get the support from her, it seemed that the episode brought them closer rather than to drive them further. Finally, Michael was accepted by Ole Miss with a football scholarship.

I couldn’t help wondering what Michael’s live would turn out to be if he didn’t meet the Touhy family. He might be a vagrant without survival techniques to make a living. He might join a gang or something to gain instant friends and help, which only could set his life up to end in one of two ways, jail or death. He might commit crime to get by. While thanks to the salvation of love, the reality turned out to be different picture. It saves talent, completes life, it also creates miracle.
