Is corruption an incurable disease?

698 views. 2010-11-27 17:12 |

The other day a rumour was rapidly spreading in the area where i live. You know what? Another government official has been arrested on suspicion of accepting bribery and corruption.  Who? Just the one who was in charge of a small but very profitable department of the ... And then she lowered her voice to a whisper mysteriously: He also kept a secret concubine, or commonly known as little No 3, and you'll not believe it he has a little boy with the girl! Really you must be joking! It's just ridiculous! How could his wife, who has been a model wife and devoted all her life to the family, accept it and face the world?  What a shameless person! Oh, My gosh! What's the matter with this society? The old saying worked again! A man will go bad if he has too much money while a woman will get rich if she goes bad.

Actually news of this kind can not be counted as news at all. Just look around in any newspaper or news coverage on TV, you will never fail to find a similar news report. Since the reform and opening up, our country has undergone a profound change both economically and socially. To be honest, the pursuit of money has become a national craze. Money! money and more money! It has, to a larger extent, become the symbol of a person's social status as well as ability. For some officials, the power coming from their position is something which can be fully taken advantage of.  So power for money is their simple way of making money. Don't they know that the power they currently have is given by the people and should be used for the people? Why can't this kind of cases be eliminated? Is it just an incurable social disease?

Maybe we have to admit it is just impossible to completely get rid of such evil things from our society in the foreseeable future. Does it mean there's nothing we can do about it? I believe we human beings have unlimited creative power. Personally I think what we need most is to reform the mechanism of social and commercial management system.  I tend to be in favor of the high salary for clean government policy practiced by Singapore. Meanwhile We must strengthen the existing laws and set up efficient law enforcement agencies to regulate the behaviors of both businesspeople and governmen officials! As long as the punishment/prevention measures are effective/powerful enough, those who intend to abuse their power will hesitate more before they do it.

you brought up a serious question. Corruption has permeated into our society so deeply that most of time we even didn't noticed it. in fact, about a month ago our GM were taken away by the authorities to help investigation on a bribery case. Guilty or not, the sad truth is that there seemed to be no other way to make a deal down.

as a common person, we seem powerless to make any change, but at least we can make some noises about it. hope as time goes on, things will be better.
