Funny or not?

880 views. 2011-4-28 13:30

People often say, “There’s no lack of beauty in life; what we lack is the eyes to discover beauty.” Similarly, we can also say: Life doesn’t lack fun, what we really lack is observation. The key is that we need to develop a good sense of humor. There is something universal on what is funny or not, but it is common that facing the same incident, we may have quite different perceptions. In this regard, a sunny positive mind does play an important role in discovering things that are funny or humorous. The following examples will enable you to judge for yourself.

“Where is my mobile phone? Have you guys ever seen it?” Jack, one of my colleagues asked anxiously, rummaging around on the desk.

Did you bring it along with you when you left home? Someone asked, trying to help him remember where he might have placed it.

“Yes, definitely I did.”

Maybe it was not his first time to find the cell phone gone, so he had gained some experience in how to discover a missing cell phone.

“Oh, I can try calling myself.” said he, quickly running to the office telephone. Almost immediately, a pleasant music ring tone went off. We were just wondering where it came from when Jack quickly reached into his inside pocket and took out a mobile phone.

Tom, a friend of mine, announced one morning that his blue-and-white flower pot had probably been stolen.

“Really? You got a blue-and-white?” somebody asked in a skeptical manner. We did keep some plants on the desks or by the windows, but none of us seemed to have noticed there was such a precious flower pot in or outside the office.

“Where did you put?” another one asked curiously.

“Just outside the door.” he answered.

Several minutes later, Tom said, “Do you think it a good idea to send a short text message to everyone in the school? Maybe I can say whoever took my blue-and-white by mistake, please kindly return it to its owner.”

“You might as well wait for a while; the pot may present itself when you least expect it.”

“I can wait, but this really bothers me a lot, as if I had mistakenly eaten a fly.”

After lunch Tom suddenly exclaimed, “I’ve got a good idea!” Then he explained, “There’s an infrared burglary protection system here, and just outside the door up there is a surveillance camera.”

“Wow!” We were amazed at his new discovery and his persistence.

Proudly, he called the school security section, requesting to see the video recording of the previous day. At that moment we were all sure that the “thief” would have no place to hide with so sophisticated a device installed.

A female colleague began to feel sorry for the one who would be found stealing on the tape. So she said to Tom, “Please have some mercy if the person turned out to be the cleaner. It’s not easy for him to make a living and he might think you had abandoned it.”

“You should also show some pity if the person turned out to be a teacher. Everyone will make mistakes. He/She is not supposed to be publicly disgraced. He/she is a teacher, anyway.” Another one also begged.

Just then, Tom announced loudly, “I found the flower pot. It’s here in the plastic bucket. I remember now that it was I who placed it in there.”

We all rushed over to see the precious pot, which became famous over half a day. It turned out to be a pretty small one, no bigger than a man’s palm. And the plant in it is withering.

“Such a small one, no wonder it escaped my notice.” a voice remarked.

“What a terrible mistake you made!” someone said reproachfully.

“I wonder how many innocent people would have been wronged.” Another person added.

Right. That does reflect the anxiety of people nowadays. I am also one of them. I went to places that have a reputation of having lots of pickpockets. As soon as I don't feel the weight of my wallet in my pocket, I would panic and quickly pad all my pockets. I changed to another pocket and forgot about it. It is totally horrible for a me to lose identity documents while traveling.

to show life is fun is, actually, not my real purpose of writing this article. as you pointed out, nowadays many people are in the state of being anxious and tired. with the tempo of life getting faster and faster, quite a few people are always in a hurry to go places or get things done, contributing to sub-health. some even age prematurely. and getting forgetful is one of the symptoms. alas!

I love a sentence in Reader magazine: "Humour can't beat the Giant, but humour tells us never to give up the courage of throwing a stone at the Giant's forehead!"

actually we all have similar experiences in our life. nowadays it is not easy to make a decent living. we seem to rush all the time, forgetting to smell the roses along the road, as we often say. sometimes we do need to slow down and have a rest. :-)
