Why Do They Decide to End Their Lives?

1740 views. 2011-5-28 09:45

Talking about suicide, I think of an article I wrote about this time last year in my qq space. The following was my observations about the issue. I sincerely hope more people will pay attention to this serious matter.

Recently I often heard people say that this year has been unfortunate for our school, for in just one year 2 bad things happened. First, a student killed himself by jumping down from the third floor and then another one ran away without asking for leave, mysteriously missing and just nowhere to be found. The whole school was on high alert and took a series of measures to ensure that no such thing would ever occur. Although it was confirmed that the suicide was committed just because he was actually a mental patient and was attacked by depression that day, although the lost girl has finally returned, the school’s day-to-day work was negatively affected and the image of the school was and still is damaged.

If you often watch TV or read newspapers, you will find that this kind of news coverage is not uncommon at all. The 2 incidents which happened in our school were on no account isolated cases. An elementary school student decided to end his life by hanging himself with his young pioneer red scarf. And he was only 11 years old! A female graduate student in Beijing Normal University also killed herself by jumping down from a high building, leaving a note saying “I am living in this world without any joy or hope.” A 23-year-old employee of Foxconn Technology Group jumped to his death on the night of May 26. It was the 10th such death and 12th such fall at the Foxconn plant in Shenzhen this year. If you search on the Net, you are sure to find numerous similar news reports concerning suicide by youngsters. Then why do so many people decide to end their lives at such a young age?

Many educators and psychologists have expressed their concern and urged relevant departments to take effective suicide prevention measures. They analyzed the cases and tried to figure out the causes of youth suicide. And most of them agree on the following reasons:

1)      The pressure of study or work is too high. As a student, you have to enter a key high school and then a prestigious university. When you finally graduate, you’ll have to get a well-paid job and then you’ll have to be able to buy a fancy car and a house. In one word, you have to succeed, otherwise you’ll be socially judged as a loser.

2)      The post-1980/90 generation is mentally vulnerable and lacks the ability of communicating with others. They are mostly the only child in the family, received much care and love from their parents and their grandparents and just don’t know what difficulty or frustration is. However, life is far from what they think to be. When they need to face the reality and have to handle it alone, they feel deeply depressed and don’t know what to do with it.

In general, I agree with them. However, I believe there should be something deeper behind it. Our society is undergoing several major social changes. Since 1978, when China began its reform and opening up to the outside world, China has been going towards the market economy. Now we are going through the transitional stage of urbanization. So the pursuit of wealth has been the major goal for many people, and their value orientation has changed greatly. Unavoidably, the education of children will also be affected. And schools cannot do the job alone.

Just look around, some officials trade their power for money or sex; law enforcement officials betray principles for bribes. Doctors prescribe unnecessary medicine for kickbacks from medicine manufacturers. Some businessmen sell fake or even toxic products without the slightest sense of guilt. So what should be the major goal of life? And what on earth is the definition of success? How should we live in this world with other people? Are we only competitors or partners? How should we treasure and spend our only life? What in the world are our rights and obligations? Many youngsters are just spiritually lost.

To put it straightforwardly, our society is partly corrupted. Moral decay is the result of a lack of strong conviction. When one has no belief system, one becomes unscrupulous or vulnerable when facing difficulties or failures.

Look back upon the years when many youths joined the Red Army and fought for the founding of new China, they risked their lives almost every moment and sometimes they had to suffer from hunger and cold, yet they struggled to live on courageously and optimistically. Why? And what was their driving force? It was the faith in communism, that is, their ideal of creating a new society that carried them along the death-packed road.

Most Westerners believe in God, They are taught from childhood that God is always watching them. And He would help those who are honest and tries hard in their work, and at the same time, He would also punish those who are dishonest or doing evil. I firmly believe that it is far better for one to have a belief than have none at all

My friend, your these concerned issue is right my thinking all the way.as a commen member on society,we saw too more things like you mentioned in your articles.this puzzled my mind all the way.not my social duty,i only a small person.merely confused the reason.
We human being put our largest efforts in our lifetime, what’s our final porpose? Improving our life qulity, educating our nationals, raising our  material level, rich our  mental world,..but in our reality life,we lived in bigger house, but broke our family;we gained more money, but giving more less;we became more beautiful, but more and more immoral issue appeared.we developed our economy, but more and more poor spirit.we gain more, but lose more else more treasured thing.more and more friends, but love less and less.i think,we human being, especially our Chineses,we  are losing  on the life way, some pity, some sad, some unwilling.all these unuaual phenomenon happened again and again.what’s wrong our human being? Who is due to these issue?not only a personal question.invital, these kinds of questions happened in more younger, more widly, more common.due to more stronger pressure? due to more faster life rhythm?due to more tired feeling?due to more modern process?i’m still at a loss,a bit.or due to our Chinese’s life style difference from foreigners?
due to our education?due to our culture characteristics?as a educator, perhaps you can give some answer.my friend.

Most post 1980/90 generation are the flowes in green house, of course, including me. I have not suffered too much although it is not that smooth in the process of school study, I think. Last night I called my parents and because of something I burst into tears. My Daddy encouraged me to be strong-willed, do not always shed tear no matter what happend. I still remembered the first day I came to college, after my Daddy went back home, I missed my parents, my brother, my friends so much in face of a totally strange surrounding and the moment my Daddy picked up the phone I just couldnot speak any word and he cheered me up, the same way as last night. Tears well up in my eyes when I think of these, I should be tough enough.
I am not a westerner, but I do believe in God, what you said in the last paragraph is just what I want to express. God bless us!

thank you for your care and interest. yes all these suicides left us in confusion. maybe it is beyond our power to pinpoint the exact causes. it could be either individual or social or mental. as i said in the blog, the drastic social change often affects one's mental or spiritual world. and the fall or the disorder of one's belief system could also lead to the state of being hopeless or lost or even desperate. personally i think efforts should be made to retain fine traditional values and develop into new belief system.

it is always nice to read your comments. i feel you're a lovely little girl, pure a little innocent and sometimes a bit emotional. but at the same time you have a kind honest enthusiastic loving heart, which is rare to find in this world.
yes younger generations are generally better taken care of and experenced less hardship or failure. it could cause potential problems, sometimes. however, i believe things would not turn out that bad as a whole. everything can change. and usu for the better, as time goes on.
so just enjoy the sunshine and smell roses if you can. life is good. :-)

i just cannot agree more. it all depends on one's attitudes. we can choose to be happy or choose to be sad or whatever. sometimes i was amazed at the rising sun and cannot help but exclaimed: how splendid it is! another beautiful day begins.

Interesting article. These are the issues affecting most of the younger generation in China today and need to be addressed. Let us see how the situation developed to as it is today.

CHINA: Chairman Deng Xiaoping once proclaimed that to get "rich is glorious". In the 1970's Deng suggested that we should let "some of the people in China to get rich first". We do not know whether this policy is a blessing or a curse. This policy created clouds of misery and confusion of the ground. This in effect sent everyone scrambling for wealth and influence. In a way, we have to tolerate this policy because China got to start somewhere, but on the other hand, this policy is an unlawful division of society and the creation of an elite class with dubious background. Eventually, it appears that those who got rich first were those who have official power and those who had political influence.

While those who benefitted from these policies are are becoming richer and richer, the common people are sinking deeper and deeper into the soaring cost of housing, education, medication, loss of ancestral homes and erosion of individual rights. The authorities says such tribulations of the people are only unavoidable side effects of the reform. The end result is that a small group of people are getting rich at the expense of the suffering majority. Today, the division of the population in terms of wealth and success is getting deeper and deeper.  Young people yearn for wealth and status. Students study extremely hard to achieve good results only to discover that a good education is no guarantee for success. People in the working sector strive hard to go get recognition for their efforts but then realise that such efforts alone are insufficient and you need to have some connections to succeed.

In 2007 the low-key attitude of Hu Jintao on the 10th anniversary of Deng's death does not imply an effort to deny Deng's policy, but rather an attempt to move from Deng's "part of the people getting rich first" policy back to Mao Zedong's equalitarianism. This started the free for all scenario which drove the citizens into the unquenchable thirst of materialism and wealth. The people are once again driven into extremes and never ending struggles.

WESTERN COUNTRIES: In western countries, the principle of equality holds, the distribution of wealth and power and more evenly distributed. Corruption is never tolerated. People are allowed to develop according to their own wishes. Children are guaranteed education and jobs are generally available to the general public. Welfare and assistance are provided to those who are in need and nobody is left behind. The elderly are generally cared for respectfully. People generally can enjoy life and stability. However, there are still problems with Western society. Western countries are fortunate to have stable climates, absence of frequent natural disasters and the gift of sufficient and valuable natural resources. Their fields are fertile and can grow desired crops readily. So long as hunger is not a problem, a country can develop much more easily. Some people in the east sees that as an unearned privilege.

The future of China lies in the concept of genuine equality, rule of law, reasonable distribution of wealth and eradication of corruption. These are all reasonable expectations. We all look forward to the day when these expectations are met.

My friend, about what’s you mentioned I dare not agree with totally.thought I don’t know the detail about your personal informations, such as your real age, your education background, your growing up surroundings, and your major, your work business, ect.but I feel your thought beyond your age, your generation.at first, explain that we only discuss some social issue online.about what your said, especial about chinese recent 30 proccess, and some ecomomy and social welfare contrast,I dare not agree with you totally.
China is a especial country in world, with long feudal society history and short Industrialization process, short reform and opening up period. many many largest difference exists at present in many many different development aspects, and not disappear in a short historical term we can expected.such as population, basic base for development, per capita resource, industrialization stage, national culture, national quality foundation, certainly, the most different lies in the political and economic system.what’s I wanna say don’t compare with between two entire different base issue.for example, only compare “GDP”and “per capita GDP”between china and USA in 2009.”GDP”china is 7916 billions dollars, percentage in the world is 11.5%,USA is 14265 billions dollars, percentage in the world is 20.7%.while “per capita GDP” ,china is 5970 dollars, rank in the world 100th.USA is 47440 dollars, rank in the world 6th.because china feed up 13 billion population, while USA only 1 billion.behind the single number,we should see the large gap,but we also should see the reason and the base.but at some another aspects, such as “unemployment Rate”and “inflation Rate”,both are almost the same.as for you mentioned “welfare” and “equality”,the same truth,I think.
I am a chinese, though our country is developing with some trouble issue in the hard development.I love my motherland too, like a child love his mother.my friend,we face our these questions, but not effect our love, not only to our country,to our nation, but also to our home,to our person.do you? My friend.

May be you see me as a foreigner but I am probably as Chinese as you are in my heart. I was born in China and grew up in China. 90% of my best friends are Chinese. Although I cannot write Chinese, I speak Chinese most of the time in my daily life. I have heard uncountable times comments from Chinese that my spoken Chinese is better than the average Chinese. I eat Chinese food daily like you do and I know and follow all the Chinese customs and tradition. I know clearly how Chinese people think in China and Hong Kong. My thinking, habits and lifestyles are not much different that the average Chinese. I have never thought of myself as a foreigner under these circumstances. I always had the thought that if China fails, I fail too because of my inalienable birthplace and upbringing. My future wife would be Chinese and my children would be half Chinese too. When I travel to Britain on my British passport, the officers often asks, how come you are born in China and why you have that obvious funny Chinese accent in your spoken English? My answer if that you know little about my birthplace, Hong Kong China which has a huge population of non-ethnic Chinese who has taken China as their home. Many foreigners have successfully acquired official Chinese nationality and  Citizenship through naturalization.  Sometimes I feel it is indeed pitiful that the people in China know so little about it's own important city Hong Kong. I also do realize that in Chinese eyes, you could not be Chinese if you don't look Chinese. Who cares? It is what I believe in and the facts that counts.

As for my information on Chinese affairs and history, Hong Kong's most valuable asset is it's freedom of information and news. I do feel Hong Kong people know more about what is going on in China than the mainlanders themselves. I am fortunate enough to be able to know what is genuinely going on in China and the world with out censorship, therefore I am able to have a well balanced view of world affairs.

My friend,at first,I’m so sorry that let you think so.to be tell my truth, perhaps due to your personal blog profile.just as my glance at that profile,I suddenly think of the national flag of Britain.merely ,don’t ensure what a person behind the special image. though visit hongkong need offer passport transacted from the public security bureau,  now hongkong is a part of our country,a world financial center too.last week, our inner training ended there managed by our headquarters in our system.we only a common small person, about talking about world affairs might be not right, not total, not exact, not deep.what we talked about is far away from the writer’s topic,so must stop here.good luck! wish happy to you,to your future bride,to your family all ,my friend,my chinese friend.

first of all, thank you for your insight. very thought provoking, a very special perspective. once again i feel the advantage of exchanging ideas freely here at dioenglish. sometimes i also wonder: is it the price we have to pay for the economic development? is it avoidable? what's wrong with our society or the governmetn? i think what you said is reasonable and basically objective. we do need to learn from western countries. not only in the area of economy, but in many others as well. i once wrote a blog called always keep an open mind, today i once more feel the need to listen to others' opinions esp ones from different countries or cultures.
as i observe, the chinese government seems to have realized the problems you mentioned. the gap between the rich and the poor, equal opportunity corruption and democracy etc. however, what they did is far from enough. it is a comprehensive huge project which involves many aspects of life. let's wait and see. and hope for the best.

reading your words, i was moved by your love for china and its culture, and your sincerity. frankly, to me, i always feel that you're kind of one of us. i once wondered how it was possible that a westerner should know us so well, how it was possible that we should have so much in common. now i seem to have found the answer. i cannot say that i agree with you on everything, but most of our viewpoints are the same or similar.
i also see that you often leave comments on the blogs here, encouraging them, comforting them, giving advice to those who are in trouble, giving them emotional support. and your opinions are always sensible, inspiring and pleasant to read. and we're only people who met online and  have never met in person and possibly will never have the chance to meet. honestly i respect you for that.
yes it is very important to have all kinds of sources of information without censorship. we need to have objective well-balanced opinions before we make judgements. though nowadays we have better access to various news and information, compared with Hongkong and many other places, we're not so well-informed. for another, though it is getting easier and easier to go abroad, most mainlanders spend their lifetime within the country,  which may limit their vision.
the only thing that makes me feel a little relieved is that china is moving forward, is making progress on the whole. hope all the problems are just ones that we meet on the way. hope this progress will continue and we common people will get more actual benefits from the reform. hehe  :-)

Having a western look and a Chinese lifestyle can be confusing to people in general. I have come across all kinds of different reactions and comments, most of which are pleasant and friendly. Sometimes people are so friendly that it is embarrassing. I am happy in life and I don't really mind having the same in my next life. My parents suffered a bit because they were not too welcome in China. My mother told me that stones were thrown at them when she went to the market with her maid, but still they had a very happy and contented life in China. Living in China as a westerner used to be insecure but now all the insecurities are gone and anyone can settle in China and have a reasonably good life. China is on the right path now. It is progressing both domestically and internationally. People in China has never been so self sufficient as it is now. However, they have  no choice but to go through the pains of modernization. When I went to Beijing, I saw a big banner which said "Your dreams start here", so that is what I believe.

Very honored to read ur this blogging,a wonderful blogging, but I can say nothing here,  personally speaking my opinion is superficial , after all above several has set a lot of things very well,.

it says that  the second rich generation  often is  corrupt pronoun in China, but in abroad it often is a great family pronoun. This is the difference between east and west. and it seems that our country is not good at deal with those incidents which u had mentioned, and our compatriots should more strengthen their  psychological quality,PS. maybe my major will be popular ~ hehes.....

A good article!
I once read a magazine article called "威胁生命的无价值感." Nowadays in China a person's value is measured by how much money he can possess. So when failing to gain material wealth as expected, the young tend to consider their own lives worthless and take their life rashly.
