Several weeks ago, one of my student assistants invited me to have lunch with her, in celebration of her successfully finding a job. The nickname of this student is Summer and she is a pretty, talkative and cute master student.
She was still in second grade when she first came. Due to our common interests, we became friends soon. I still remember that she complained a lot about her master study at that time, such as how difficult it was for her to publish a paper in the Core Journal and her tutor didn’t like her because of her poor grade and limited academic ideas. In the following one year, I shared some of her worries, from how to write final paper to how to find an agreeable job in today’s un-optimistic job market. But at the same time, I found that she has many advantages in non-major fields, such as excellent English writing and speaking, outward disposition and persistency in achieving a goal. She also has rich experience in doing interns, no matter it was short program or long program. She left her footprints in consulting companies, foreign companies and now she has successfully registered to be a volunteer for Shanghai World Expo. The time she invited me to lunch, she had signed the agreement with a good state-owned company and won an admirable position (here I mean for a new graduator).
This story has not come to its end after her finding a well-content job mentioned at the lunch table. In the next two weeks, she got another two nice offers which disturbed her again and again, and one of them is in Fortune 500 list. Now she could not make her choice and complained to me again……
And I begin to think about the usefulness of grades in the now society. I just wonder how many companies will pay attention to the A, B or C in the students’ report cards, by contrast, some certificates like senior oral-translate license, CET8 certificate or intern certificates increasing show their importance. Of course, you can choose to stay in academic institution, which means your future life is a doomed to be a process of competing diploma and academic papers.
It is the reality of life, right? I really feel happy for my student assistant and friend Summer and wish she make a decision which she will not regret in the future.
