You know that I subscribe an English newspaper called 21st century every year. I like reading English newspaper, which gives my study a hand. A good idea comes to me that I would like to recommend you some good articles from English newspaper. Let’s study English together.

 

Exam scandal shame

 

The recent leak of English test papers for the national graduate school extrance exam has brought shame on the Ministry of Education and the country’s educational system, according to China Daily.

Two people were allegedly(据称) provided the answers have been arrested.

More shame, however, falls on examinees who benefited from the leak without realizing the possible legal and moral consequences, warned expers.

The answers to the English national exam were sent to a wide range of examinees through text messages just before they were due to sit the exam on January 7. The cheating was soon uncovered and shocked the nation.

In response, the Ministry of Education launched an investigation. So far two employees from Sailing Education Group have been arrested and charged with “leaking State secrets”, the Southern Weekly reported.

Those who benefited from the leaked answers are expected to escape lightly.

The ministry has askede local education department and institutions of higher learning to chaech the English ability of suepects cheats in re-exams and interviews.

If a candidate is confirmed to be involved in cheating, he or she will be disqualified from the exams and will be disciplined by the university.

“The Chinese mainland has no law specially targeting exam cheats,”said Chen Buchun from Guangdong Fangyuan Law Firm. ”Basically they are disciplined by their schools. They may have their marks scrubbed(取消), or be expelled from school.

News commentator Wang Shichuan wrote on the Life News that the light punishment is a major reason behind exam cheating.

“If the worst thing that happens is to have your mark eliminated, the cheats and those who hire them will not be deterred(威慑),” he wrote.

A recent investigative report by the Southern Weekly reveals that leaks of many other national exams are suspected. These inclyde politics and maths in the national graduate school entrance exam, College English Test Band 4 and 6 and civil servant’s recruitment exam.

Students who don’t treat cheating seriously might taste bitter consequences on a broader stage.

Last last month, three mainland college students were sent to prison for 10 months in Hong Kong for sitting TOEFL exams on behalf of other people.

The three from colleges in Guangdong province were paid 2,000 yuan to take the exam using fame passport, according to the law in Hong Kong, forging or using false documents could lead to 14 years in prison.

Beside, bribing professors to obtain exam papers and answers is illegal in Hong Kong.

Instead of copying the law in Hong Kong, Wang suggested we learn form their “zero-tolerance” towards exam cheating.

“The dignity of assessment throught exams cannot be infringed(侵犯), he wrote on the Life News.
