MaDonald’s, the fast food giant, has come under fire in China

A CCTV program on March 15 exposed alleged（有嫌疑的） irregularities at a MaDonald’s restaurant in Beijing.

Restaurant staff were seen changing the expiry dates on foods.

Zhang Yongheng, a commentator writing on Guangzhou daily, says the McDonald’s stringent（严厉的）food processing and serving standards have made it a favorite in the Chinese market。

But CCTV’s expose showed that company employees have not complied with and have even ignored, its own standards.

Some internet commentators have sided with MaDonald’s, insisting that the issues unvoverd by CCTV are almost negligible（可以忽略的）compared with problems with Chinese-run restaurants.

They say we should cut the food chain some slack. But Zhang insists that China should severely punish MaDonald’s for these problems, deterring（阻止） it from any future offenses.

Evern though big multinationals like MaDonald’s may have almost spotless record in the rest of the world, they should not be given any passes when failing to live up to their reputation in China.

As a huge county with 1.3 billion consumers, China must hold consumers’ safety and satisfaction sacred（神圣的）, and not make any compromises whtn protecting consumers, writes Zhang.

China also needs to seize opportunities like this and further improve its legal and judicial systems.

It should also implement the most stringent regulatory measures, so as to build up its defenses against shoddy（劣质的） and unsafe goods, Zhang suggests.
