Root and branch moves to country

While many college graduates rush to the city to look for work, others have their eyes on the countryside.

Graduate Liu Xingguang, 22, divides her time between her downtown campus and the rural area of Shenzhen, Guangdong.

With only three months to go before graduation, Liu, a biology major at Shenzhen University, has already opted to remain in the countryside to grow organic（有机的） vegetables.

“I’ve notices that organic foods sell very well in community markets in Shenzhen,” said Liu.

She has rented 1,200 square meters if arable land for 800 yuan per month.

“Organic produce commands（支配） three times the price of non-organic vegetables and is in short supply,” said liu

“That’s why I want to start my business in this industry.”

Liu is one of legion（众多） of students lured by opportunites in the burgeoning（迅速发展） high-tech agriculture sector. She is studying non-chemical fertilizers to ensure her organic produce meets stict government standards.

Due to mounting health concerns and the demands of sustainability, the eco-friendly and low-energy comsumption industry has become a growth area.

By getting involved in agriculture studens can apply their advanced skills and knowledge.

A recent survey of more than 500 students from 15 univerisites was condeucted by the Development Research of Youth at Hebei University.

It found that fewer than 20 percent of students were against returning back to their villages.

“University students, especially those who grew up in  a village, are best able to contribute ti rural development,” said Zhang Qiushan, director of the centre.

Their advanced ideas can help them to make big changes in agriculture production and management.

Liu Hongyu, 26, introduced new growing methods in the 50 greenhouses he built on related land.

After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in clinical medicine from Sichuan University, he went to work in Boshui, village, in Banzhuyuan town, Chengdu, in 2008.

Liu grows beans sprouts（豆芽） in six greenhouse. With temperature, humidity, and lighting all computer-controlled, he can harvest more than a ton of bean sprouts per day. His produce is sold in most supermarkets in Chengdu.

Liu has also experimented with other technologies, such as a tomato tree which produces 5,000 tomatoes thanks to special nutrient spray.

“People need to change their ideas about work, big cities are crowded with talent,” he said.

“But in the countryside, you have scope to carry out your ideas and showcase your creativity. Villagers are willing to learn and to work with you if they see good results.”

Students have become an important factor in heling the rural economy, according to Zhang.

However, they have to adapt to rural life and culture, particularly those from an urban background. “If they can’t adjust to rural life, problems may quickly arise. They have to be mentally prepared,” Zhang added.

But it’s not easy to get involved into village life. “Even language can be an obstacle. If you cannot speak their dialect, sometimes you cannot communicaite with villages,“ said Zhou Peng, 27, a chemistry major form Shandong University.

She has persuaded farmers to plant flowers that were considerd “useless” in Dongtai Town, Shandong.
