Some articles I recommend(五十四)

You know that I subscribe an English newspaper called 21st century every year. I like reading English newspaper, which gives my study a hand. A good idea comes to me that I would like to recommend you some good articles from English newspaper. Let’s study English together.

Winners admits she argues with herself

Chen Jiehao, English Anchoring major at Communication University of China, regards herself as a lazy student. She thinks taking part in competitions keeps her busy so she wastes less time idling on campus.

The 20-year-old winner of the 21st Century Cup National Speaking Competition adopted old-fashioned methods to become the country’s top student speaker.

Chen enjoyed freaky Friday so much she watcher the movie repeatedly till she could recite in English the dialogue of every scene. She believes that repetition and recitation will magically turn a novice(新手) English learner into a good speaker

I like recitation. Every text I find interesting I want to recite so that I can use it in the future,” said Chen. ”By repeating I learn the sentence structure which applies in other context.”

According to Chen, pronunciation and intonation(声调) need no formal training. “If you imagine you are in a play you can pick up an English accent very easily,” suggested Chen.

However, Chen does not think it was pronunciation that won her the top prize. Instead, she sees content and logic the killer in the competition.

“I don’t know how to beat around the bush,” said Chen. “If I talk about something, I focus on one point and elaborate it as much as I can.”

But it is not an easy job. Chen believes that her steady performance in the impromptu(即席的) speech and the Q&A session came from her accumulation of knowledge in her daily life.

She likes to listen to the news and does research online and offline to get a bigger picture of social issues.

Chen thinks that a lot of news on the Internet or on micro blogs is often superficial(肤浅的). In order to have a deeper understanding, independent thinking is vital.

“It does not mean anything to restate someone else’s views. I form my own opinion about issues so that every argument I make is from my own analysis.”

But Chen is not infallible(没有错误的). Luckily, she likes speaking to herself. Sometimes, she even argues with herself. Debating with herself whenever she comes across a new idea is a hobby of hers.

“I set up a point initially and then try to overturn it by finding a flaw(缺点) in the theory,” said Chen. “Then I try to defend it before I attack it again.”

In this way Chen gradually builds a watertight (严密的)argument almost spontaneously.

Chen had her eyes opened by taking part in and winning the top public speaking competition involving students with different opinions from all over china.

“Communication is not about persuading others but rather it’s about putting forward well-reasoned arguments and getting your message across,” she said.
