much of robert lee's success as the commander in chief of the confederate army was due to his use of flank attacks by fast-marching generals. his invasion of maryland was especially notable for the number of worn soldiers who fell by the wayside. one of the stragglers later returned to his regiment. when asked by his commanding officer to explain his absence from the battle of antietam, he replied, “ i had no shoes. i tried it barefoot, but somehow my feet wouldn't callous. they kept bleeding. i found it so hard to keep up that though i had the heart of a patriot, i began to feel i didn't have patriotic feet. of course i could have crawled on my hands and knees, but then my hands would have got so sore i couldn't have fired my rifle. ”
