My View on the Nationwide Fever of LearningEnglish
我对英语热的观点
In recent years, especially since China’s entry intothe WTO, a “fever” of learning English issweepingover the whole country. The learners are ofdifferent ages.Besides, for years, the language hasbecome compulsory for students at different levels,from primary schools to institutions of higherlearning. Some people think it is nothing but afashion.
近些年，特别是自从中国进入世贸组织以来，英语热在全国兴起。学习者的年龄不等。此外，近些年语言已经成为了学生的必修课程，不论他是小学生，还是接受高等教育的学生。许多人认为这只是一种跟风。
As far as I am concerned, I think it is the trend of the times, rather than a fashion.First of all,peoplelearn English for different purposes. It seems that students have to learn Englishbecause it is a compulsory subject in the syllabus, and because they are required to passvarious English examinations, such as CET-4, CET-6, TEM-4, etc., in order to gain diplomas andacademic degrees. But the truth is that a skillfulmastery of the language at school can alsoprovide them with a chance of getting better employment. It hasbecome a basic skill needed forvarious jobs and a practical tool for social communication. More and more people are learningEnglish for practical use rather than taking examinations or just following the fashion. The factthat people’s purposes of learning English are diversified shows that the English language hasbecome a social skill.
我认为这是时代的大趋势，而不是一种跟风。第一，人们学习英语的目的不一。似乎学生必须要学习英语，这是因为英语是必修课程，学校要求学生考各种英语考试。例如四六级，专四等。只有通过考试我们才能拿到毕业证。但是，事实是良好的语言技能可以得到更好的就业机会。英语已经成为了各种职业的基本技能，也是社会交流的实用工具。越来越多的人正在为了实际使用而学习英语，而不仅仅是为了跟风，或是通过考试。事实上，人们学英语的目的各不相同，这就表明英语已经成为了一种社会技能。
All in all, I think that learning English nowadays is not a fashion but a trend, a trend thatpeople should not follow blindly, but with clear and specific purposes.If it is a “fever”, thisfever will set up a new standard as for how the learning of English is perceived.
总之，我认为学习英语已经不是一种时尚，而是趋势，人们不能盲目跟随这种大趋势，而是要有明确的目的。如果这是一种潮流，那么这种潮流将会为学习英语重新建立标准。
