Little Harvest Mouse

阅读 :

Little Harvest Mouse was puzzled. It seemed to him that he'd not been awake for long, and now all his friends were saying it was time to start making beds for the winter.

“Autumn is coming,” said the squirrel as he scampered past with his paws full of nuts. “Winter follows autumn.”

“Autumn is here,” squeaked the dormouse, as he whisked by with a heap of moss and grass.

Little Harvest Mouse blinked. “But where? I can't see autumn,” he squeaked.

“Autumn is all around you,” said Mr Wise Owl from the branch of the big oak tree. “See how the leaves have turned red and yellow and brown? See how they tumble down? That is autumn. There go the dandelion clocks, I thought they'd be off soon.”

“Really,” said Harvest Mouse, with another big yawn. “All this bustle and fuss makes me feel tired.”

Suddenly he felt that perhaps he'd like to have a little nap too, only he hadn't a bed he could go to. Then he remembered a hayrick he'd seen. So off he scampered to burrow in the hayrick.

“I'll have a little sleep and then I'll wake up to see what winter is like, and if I don't like it I'll go to sleep again,” he said.

So that's what he did. Until one day he woke up to find that winter had gone, and spring had come, and the sun was warm.
