Fighting Cock

阅读 :

Once Upon a time there lived a farmer in a village. One day, when he was returning home from his fields, it started raining.

Trying hard to protect himself from the rain, he somehow reached the door of his house. There, he saw two chicks, getting drenched in the rain. The poor chicks were shivering and were standing near the wall of the farmer's house.

On seeing them, the farmer felt pity on them. He picked them up and brought them into his house.

Inside the house, a bright fire was burning. So, it was warm there. Both the chicks soon became warm and stopped shivering. They began to hop around in the kitchen. The farmer gave them some grains too. He enjoyed looking at the chicks very much.

When it was late at night and the farmer was about to sleep, he put the chicks in a basket. To make them safe, he covered the basket so that no cat could come and pounce on them.

The farmer was thinking that he would give the chicks back to their master if he came looking for them in the morning.

But next morning, nobody came to the farmer, searching for his chicks. And the farmer did not have the time to look for their master. So, he decided to keep the chicks with him. He thought that he would sell them when they grew up a little.

Then, the farmer made a wooden enclosure for the chicks to live in.

With the passage of time, the farmer grew fond of the chicks. He would look after them in the best possible way and would feed them with good-quality grains.

The result was that in a few months, the chicks grew up into big cocks. But by then, they had become very lazy. Since they had nothing to do, they kept fighting between themselves.

One afternoon, the farmer had gone to work on his fields. One of the cocks was sleeping after eating his fill. But the other cock was hopping around. He did not want to sleep.

While jumping around, his foot fell on the sleeping cock's stomach. He was startled by this sudden attack. He woke up and he ordered the other cock to go out.

The other cock did not like to be pushed around like this. He retorted, “Why should I go out? I will not go. If you want to sleep go out, you lazybones!”

“I am not lazybones. Everybody should take rest after having meal. It is necessary for good health. But you are good for nothing. You are disturbing me. If you want to hop around, go out. Let me sleep,” said the first cock.

“How dare you call me a good-for-nothing? I will teach you a lesson.” saying this, the second cock leapt on the first one.

The both of them began to fight fiercely. Both of them were physically strong. They attacked one another with their sharp claws.

During the fight, both of them were badly injured. At last, one of the cocks gave up. Feeling exhausted, he went inside the farmer's house and hid there.

The other cock was glad to be the winner. Now, nobody could dare to ask him to go out of the enclosure.

He jumped up and climbed on the roof of the enclosure.

There, he began to crow loudly. He wanted to tell the world that he had won the fight.

On hearing his cock-a-doodle-doo, a cat reached there.

She caught that cock and killed him. The cock that was hidden in the farmer's house has been watching this.

Seeing that his enemy was dead, he felt very happy.

Now there was no one left to trouble him.

As soon as the cat left, he went inside the enclosure and went off to sleep. But his happiness was only short-lived.

He had been so badly injured during the fight that he also died after some time.
