The Kitten who lost his Purr

阅读 :

Sooty, the kitten, had lost his purr.

“I am sure I had it this morning,” he said to himself. “I think I lost it when I saw that cheeky black kitten from next door sitting in my garden, in my basket, of all places! Well, I soon chased him out. I don't think he will come back in hurry. I know I'll look round all the places I went to this morning and then I'm sure to find it.”

So out into the garden went Sooty, and there he saw a duck.

“Oh, excuse me, duck,” he said, “have you seen a purr? It is quite a little one. I lost in this morning.”

But the duck gave him a scornful look and waddled on without a word.

“Oh dear,” sighed Sooty. “No one seems to have seen my purr. It must be somewhere in the garden because I did not go anywhere else this morning.”

Then he gave a little hop and a skip. “I will climb up the apple tree and then I will be able to see all over the garden!”

Up the apple tree he went until he reached the highest branch of all and from there he could see all over the garden, far below him.

Well, it wasn't in the gooseberry bushes and it wasn't in the cabbage patch. Sooty turned round carefully so that he could see the flower beds. No, it was no use, there was no purr to be seen anywhere!

“I think I'd better go down now,” said Sooty sadly to himself. “It must be about lunch time, anyway.”

And then he discovered how much easier it was to climb up a tree then to climb down!

When he tried to climb down backwards he nearly fell down, and when he tried to go down forwards, he found that he dare not move at all! So he had to stay where he was.

Soon a little boy came into the garden and heard Sooty mewing softly.

“Why, it's kitten!” said the little boy in surprise. And he fetched a ladder, climbed up and brought Sooty safely down.

And sooty was so happy that he began to purr quite loudly to show his thanks to the kind little boy. Then, all at once, he stopped. “Well,” he said in surprise, “my purr must have been in the apple tree after all!”
