Shrine of Goddess Durga

阅读 :

King Trivikram Sen went again to that tree, in the cemetery, took Vetaal placed it on his shoulder and set out the journey in silence. On the way, Vetaal said to the King, “You are genius, wise and brave, therefore I live you. Now I will tell you an interesting tale so that you may forget your fatigue. And he started:

Yashketu was a famous King on the earth and  his kingdom's capital was known as Sobhavati. There was a great temple of Gauri, which was also called the Gauritirth. In the south of this temple, there was a lake in which the large crowd of people used to come to take bath from every part of the world, every year in the month of Ashadha.

Once, Dhavala, a washerman of village Brahamsthala came there to take bath in the lake. He saw Madansundari, the virgin daughter of Suddhapata there, who had also come to take bath in the sacred water of the lake. His heart was captivated by Madansundari, who eclipsed the grand beauty of the moon. After enquiring about her name and family, Dhavala, the washerman went to his home lost in the love of Madansundari.

After reaching home, he felt restless without Madansundari and remained fasting. When his mother saw this, she asked him and then he told everything to her mother and also his desire to marry Madansundari.

The mother immediately informed her husband Vimal about son's state of mind. He came to his son and saw him, then he said to him, “Why are you so worried, my son? You can marry Madansundari very easily. Suddhapata will definitely give his daughter to you. I have to ask him for that only, because we are equal to him in status, family, wealth and business. Moreover, we know each other very well. So don't worry, this is not a difficult matter for me to fulfill your desire.”

The next day, Vimal along with his son Dhavala went to see Suddhapata and asked the hand of Madansundari for his son. Suddhapata promised to give his daughter in marriage to him heartily.

After ascertaining the auspicious moment of marriage, both were married the next day. Dhavala returned to his home after marriage as a very happy man, with his wife Madansundari, who had also fallen in love with him at the first sight. Now, they look like made for each other and were living together happily.

One day, Madansundari's brother came to them. All received him very courteously. His sister and brother-in-law greeted him with open arms. After sometime, he told his reason to visit them. He said, “I have been sent here to invite Madansundari and son-in-law by my father, since we are engaged in a festival to honour the goddess Durga.”

“Alright, we both will come with you. Don't worry. Now take rest.” said Dhavala.

And the early next morning, Dhavala left for his father-in-law's house with his wife and brother-in-law. He reached the city of Sobhavati and saw the great temple of Goddess Durga. When he reached nearer to the temple, he said to his wife and brother-in-law in a devotional mood, “Come and let us visit the temple of Goddess Durga.”

When brother-in-law heard this, he said, “How can it be possible to approach the goddess empty handed.”

“Then let me go alone and you wait outside till I return.”said Dhavala and went off to pay his respects to the Goddess in the temple.

When he entered the temple, he worshipped and meditated in full devotion, the Goddess Durga, who in return with her eighteen mighty arms had given Danavas to Dhavala. The Goddess also broke the misunderstandings of the Dhavala's mind which were created by the impulse of Destiny, and then Dhavala said to himself “Men worship and meditate this goddess with various sacrifices of the living creatures, so why should not I do the same to obtain salvation with the sacrifice of myself.”

After this, he took from her inner shrine, which had no worshippers at that time, a sword which had been offered to Goddess long ago by her some devotee and after fastening his own head by the chain of the bell, he cut it off, with the sword and when it was cut off, he fell on the ground.

When Dhavala did not return, after a long waiting his brother-in-law became nervous. He went into the temple of the Goddess in search of his brother-in-law. But when he saw his sister's husband lying on the ground in very critical condition, he also was bewildered, and in the same way, he also cut off his head with that same sword.

Now Madansundari was left alone outside the temple. She was waiting the return of his brother and as well as her husband, but nobody turned up, so Madansundari got impatient and she too entered the temple of the Goddess Drug.

And when she had gone in the temple and saw her husband and brother in very peculiar state, she fell on the ground. She could not see them in such state. She then exclaimed “What does this means? I am ruined.” She stood up very quickly and lamented those two who had been slain unexpectedly. She said to herself: “Now what is the use of my life?” and was very eager to abandon her body, she said to the Goddess: “Nobody knows your art. Why you have taken the life of my brother and husband? This is not good which you have done on my part. So hear one appeal of mine. I am now to abandon this body which is afflicted with the calamity, but please grant me one thing in my all future births, whatever they may be, these two men may be my brother and husband.”

She bowed her head again before the Goddess. After that she made a noose of a creeper and fastened it to a Ashoka tree. And when she was stretching out her neck and putting the same into the noose, suddenly some words resounded in the air :“ Don't do any thing rashly, my daughter. I am pleased to see your courage which you have displayed. Now let this noose be, but you join the heads of your husband and brother to their bodies, and virtue of my favour, both shall rise up alive.”

When Madansundari heard this, she let the noose drop and went up to the bodies in great delight. But she confused himself and stuck her husband's head on to her brother's trunk and her bother's to her husband. After this, both rose up alive but from their heads having changed, their bodies has also been mixed together.

After that they told one another what befallen on them. They were now happy and after worshipping Goddess Durga, all the three continued their journey. But Madansundari as she was also going with them, saw that she had changed the heads of brother and husband, and she was too much confused and puzzled as to what she has to take.

And so tell me, my dear King, out of those two people, thus mixed together, who was Madansundari's husband? asked Vetaal.

King Trivikramsen listened this story from Vetaal and answered him “ That one out of those two, on whom her Husband's head was fixed was her husband because the head is the chief of the limbs, and complete identity of the person depends on it.”

As soon as the King answered the Vetaal's Question, Vetaal again left King's shoulder and went away to his place as King again broke his promise by answering his question.
