Monsieur Marmot

阅读 :

Monsieur Marmot was very French, and he lived high up in the mountains called the Alps.

Monsieur Marmot had many friends and he was kind, but he had one great weakness. He ate too much!

Now one day, like all good marmots, he was called upon to do his guard duty, while the others searched for their food of seeds, roots and leaves. This meant that he had to stand straight up on a mound while they looked on the high ground for their supper.

They always had to do this, because above them lived a mean, miserable eagle, who liked nothing better than to swoop down on the little marmots and frighten them, and this was most upsetting and unpleasant for them all.

So Monsieur Marmot did his very best to be a good sentry. He stood upright, and kept his sharp eyes upon for danger-but alas, as always, he fell into a deep sleep standing up. His friends, not knowing that he was asleep, gaily went about gathering their food higher up the mountain.

Suddenly Monsieur Marmot found himself being swooped on by the miserable eagle and carried high into the sky. Higher and higher the old eagle took him, until at last he dropped him in his nest.

  “Help! Help!” cried Monsieur Marmot.

“Ha! Ha!” laughed the eagle. “I like Marmot Pie for my supper. Yum! Yum!”

The next moment, Monsieur Marmot felt as if he was falling-down, down he went, and then, BUMP! He was on guard again, still standing up. “Goodness, I must have fallen asleep,” he said thankfully, “it was only a dream!” But it scared him so much, that in future he took very good care not to be greedy any more, because it always sent him to sleep.

“Not hungry?” asked the curious Marmots, when they saw him eating so much less.

“No fear,” he would say, and we all know why-don't we?
